Architecture Exchange East (ArchEx) 2026

Architecture Exchange East is the annual thought-leadership conference and expo curated by AIA Virginia. The 2026 edition, themed Threshold, will be held November 4-6, 2026 in Richmond, Virginia.

2026 Theme: Threshold

The 2026 theme explores how architecture navigates transitions: preserving wisdom while embracing change, maintaining core focus while expanding impact, and honoring the past while building what comes next. Architecture stands at a threshold as firms face an unprecedented transfer of ownership and leadership, cities transform aging infrastructure, and shifts in business, culture, and technology reshape how design is delivered. Architects are expanding beyond traditional practice into entrepreneurship, urban planning, civic leadership, and new territory.

Program Tracks

Practitioners explore five key topics:

• Leadership Transitions - Succession planning, generational collaboration, and knowledge transfer
• Practice Reinvention - New business models, emerging technology, and human-centered growth
• Reuse & Resilience - Adaptive reuse, circular economy, climate resilience, and regenerative futures

• Expanding Impact - Beyond buildings: urbanism, civic leadership, policy influence, and new frontiers
