Course description

Focuses on how electric power is transferred from generation sources to distribution systems via the interconnected electric bulk power system known as “the grid”. Introduces the basic physical laws governing the grid and the regulatory agencies involved in its governance, and explores the great blackouts. Topics include an introduction to the fundamentals of the transmission system, interconnections, substations, transformers and control systems, wholesale power markets and how energy gets priced.

The Plain Talk series also includes Day 1 – Power System Basics (21 July) and Day 2 – Distribution System (22 July). The 2026 edition has concluded; the next in-person Plain Talk dates are to be announced (upcoming continuous learning is available on demand via the IEEE PES Resource Center).
